Australia's Sean Lake successfully defended his elite men's title as the Oceania Road Cycling Championships drew to a close in Canberra today.

Lake completed the course in a time of 3 hours 47min 23sec to cross the line in front of compatriots Neil Van Der Ploeg and Jesse Featonby.

Van Der Ploeg and Featonby were both 74 seconds adrift of their team-mate, who produced another excellent ride to clinch his second elite men's goal medal in a row.

"It means heaps to come back to these races and take the wins especially after a disappointing nationals and changing the type of rider I am," Lake said.

"It’s huge for the confidence and hopefully I'll have a big year ahead."

He added: "Really tough conditions out there but I really like races that are hard and hot all day, they seem to suit me well.

"I did watch the Australian team riders a fair bit as they were super strong today and I think I managed to play my cards perfectly to drop all the elite riders and get away with them."

Australia's Lucas Hamilton won the men’s road race to wrap up under-23 honours.

He finished in a time of 3:47.18, with team-mates Michael Storer and Jai Hindley claiming the silver and bronze medals respectively.
