Third seed Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic battled through to the third round of the Indian Wells Masters with a three-set victory over Olympic champion Monica Puig.

The 2016 US Open runner-up struggled early on and won just a single game in the first set before she recovered to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Plíšková is now due to face a tough opponent in the round of 32 as she will take on Dominika Cibulková of Slovakia.

Cibulková also needed three sets to progress as she overcame Latvia's Jeļena Ostapenko 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Elsewhere in the women's singles draw, Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza, last year's French Open champion and the seventhseed at Indian Wells, cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens.

Kayla Day of the United States awaits for Muguruza in the next round.

World number 11 Johanna Konta defeated team-mate Heather Watson in the British pair's first-ever Women's Tennis Association Tour meeting.

Konta proved too strong for her compatriot and set up a meeting with Caroline Garcia of France with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

The seeded players largely had it all their own way in the women's singles event as Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, seeded eighth, beat Sweden's Johanna Larsson 7-6, 6-4.

Kuznetsova, a two time Grand Slam winner, will entertain Italian Roberta Vinci, who accounted for American Madison Brengle with a 7-6, 6-4 victory.

In the men's singles, France's Benoit Paire crashed out of the tournament as he suffered a shock 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of American qualifier Taylor Fritz in this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event.

Fritz's opponent in the second round is scheduled to be sixth seed Marin Cilic.

Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland also made it through to the second round with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Croatia's Borna Coric to set up a meeting with Jack Sock of the United States.
