The first stage of the World Para Swimming World Series is set to start tomorrow in Copenhagen.

A total of 122 swimmers from 19 countries are heading to the in the Danish capital with the races being run as multi-class heats and finals.

The only exceptions to this are the men’s 50 metre freestyle S9, the men’s 200m individual medley SM7, women’s 50m freestyle S10 and women’s 200m individual medley SM9, which will be single class races.

The series was unveiled in December and marks the first time an official circuit for Para swimming competition has been organised.

Among the swimmers heading to Denmark will be 23-time Paralympic Games medallist Jessica Long of the United States.

The 25-year-old said she was very excited to have the new season around the corner.

“I think it [the World Series] is fantastic,” Long, who has 13 Paralympic golds, said.

“It is really going to grow the Movement and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

“Overall, I am thrilled to get back in the water to race and see what I can do.”

Competition starts tomorrow and is due to continue until Sunday.

The World Series calendar will see stages also heald in Sao Paulo, Sheffield, Indianapolis and Berlin during the year before the World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico City, scheduled to run from September 29 to October 6.
