Spain's Rio 2016 Olympic Games champion Carolina Marin avoided a scare at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Yonex All England Open in Birmingham today as she came from a game down to progress.

The tournament's second seed looked to be on the verge of being eliminated by He Bingjiao of China at the Barclaycard Arena.

He took the opening game 15-21 before coming agonisingly close to beating the Spaniard in straight games.

However, Marin rallied to take the second 21-19 before going on to secure her place in tomorrow's quarter-finals as she took the third game 21-10.

She will now face Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon for a place in the semi-finals after the fifth seed defeated Hsu Ya Ching of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 21-15 in straight games.

Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, winner of the women's singles title at the Dubai World Superseries Finals in December, defeated Minatsu Mitani of Japan today.

The top seed came out on top in an epic opening game, sneaking ahead 27-25.

But the second was much more comfortable as Tai secured her place in the next round by taking it 21-11.

In the men's singles, Rio 2016 champion Chen Long of China was knocked out by Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand.

The world number 11 defeated Chen, who was seeded fifth in this competition, 21-16, 21-19.

Double Olympic champion Lin Dan of China defeated his compatriot Huang Yuxiang today.

The Beijing 2008 and London 2012 men's singles champion, who won this tournament last year, collected a comfortable 21-16, 21-11 win.

Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia secured his place in the last eight of the competition with a straight games win over Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei.

The number one seed went through 21-18, 21-18.

The favourites in the women's doubles event, the Japanese duo of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi, were knocked out by compatriots Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota.

The unseeded pairing took the first game 21-16 before their ominous opponents won the second 19-21 to level the contest up.

It was the underdogs who prevailed though, winning the third game 21-16.

Much to the delight of the home crowd, England's Chris and Gabrielle Adcock advanced to the last eight of the mixed doubles event.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallists are seeded seventh and defeated Xu Chen and Du Ye of China 21-17, 21-12.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with the quarter-finals of the Superseries tournament.
