The deal - which provides exclusive coverage in Germany and non-exclusive rights in Austria and Switzerland - has been brokered by Lagardère Sports.

It means Sport1 will be able to provide cross-media coverage on all of its platforms throughout the World Games.

This will include both free and pay-for-view television along with live-streaming and digital platforms.

News, interviews, background stories, picture galleries and videos will all be part of the coverage.

International World Games Association (IWGA) chief executive Joachim Gossow said: "We are very pleased that The World Games will be covered by Sport1. 

"It's the first time that we will have this kind of free-to-air platform in Germany. 

"I am sure other countries in Europe will follow Germany’s example."

The World Games features sports which are not on the Olympic programme.

Twenty-seven sports will be contested in Wroclaw between July 20 and 30 this year.

Sport1 GmbH chief executive Olaf Schröder said: "With The World Games we are showcasing the world's biggest multi-sport event of the year for our viewers in the summer. 

"As a 360 degrees sports platform, we will give the world-class athletes from the numerous traditional and new sports their big stage in July."
