Chair umpire Arnaud Gabas has undergone eye surgery in France after receiving a fracture to his orbital bone via Denis Shapovalov's stray ball.

Canada's Shapovalov was fined $7,000 (£5,600/€6,500) by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as a result of the incident in the Davis Cup tie between Britain and Canada.

The 17-year-old, who won the Wimbledon boys' singles title last year, was two sets down in the tie's decisive rubber against Kyle Edmund and smashed a ball in frustration after dropping serve in the third.

It hit Gabas in the umpire’s chair, leaving him with a bruise on the left side of his face.

The ITF have confirmed that a fracture of the orbital bone, under Gabas' left eye, was detected when doctors performed X-rays in Ottawa, where the tie took place.

Gabas returned to France to undergo surgery and his doctors have recommended a period of rest and recovery.

"I would like to thank my doctors for their excellent support," said Gabas.

"The surgery was successful and I am now concentrating on rest and rehabilitation so I can be back on court in the near future.

"I would also like to express my sincere gratitude for all the messages of support I have received from around the world."

Britain won the World Group first round clash 3-2 at the TD Place Arena as a result of the incident, as Shapovalov was disqualified.

Edmund was 6-3, 6-4, 2-1 up at the time.

The ITF ruled that the teenager had shown no intent.

Shapovalov, who could have been hit with a harsher sanction had it been deemed intentional, admitted feeling "ashamed and embarrassed" after the incident.

"I would just like to begin by apologising to the referee and to all ITF officials, and to be honest all officials," he said last week.

"I went back and spoke to the referee after and apologised directly to him, luckily he was okay.

"Obviously it was just unacceptable behaviour from me and to be honest, I just feel incredibly ashamed and embarrassed and I just feel awful for letting my team down, my country down, for acting in a way that I would never want to act."
