Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena of the United States fought back from a set down to beat Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt of Brazil to reach the semi-finals of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour event in Fort Lauderdale.

The American duo got revenge for their loss at the hands of the Brazilian duo in the quarter-finals of last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as they earned a battling 13-21, 21-17, 15-10 triumph.

Dalhausser and Lucena will take on Evandro Goncalves and André Loyola in the last four after the Brazilian pair overcame Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb of the US 21-19, 21-17.

"It felt like a final," said Dalhausser.

"We came out so flat and they were on fire.

"It felt really good to come back and win on three.

"Nick calmed down a little bit and started siding out great.

"That was the difference from the first set."

Álvaro Filho and Saymon Barbosa, also of Brazil, booked their place in the semi-finals by beating Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek and Michal Bryl 21-14, 21-17.

Their opponents in the last four will be the American pairing of John Hyden and Ryan Doherty, who stunned Rio 2016 silver medallists Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai of Italy with a surprise 12-21, 21-19, 15-11 victory.

In the women's competition, Olympic bronze medallists Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross will face a familiar opponent in the last eight as they will take on Agatha Bednarczuk and her new partner Eduarda Lisboa.

Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas beat the American duo in the semi-finals at Rio 2016 before they went on to claim the silver medal.

Walsh Jennings and Ross, the top seeds, advanced with a 21-18, 21-14 win over Russians Ekaterina Birlova and Nadezda Makroguzova, while Bednarczuk and Lisboa edged past Lauren Fendrick and Sara Hughes 17-21, 21-18, 17-15.

Seixas is also competing in Fort Lauderdale with Fernanda Alves and the pair will be involved in all-Brazilian quarter-final clash with Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca, who also reached the Rio 2016 semi-finals.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
