In addition, two Algerian Olympic champions - Noureddine Morceli and Nouria Merah-Benida - attended the opening.

Track and field star Morceli, a triple world champion, won men's 1,500 metres gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, while Merah-Benida triumphed over the same distance in the women's race at Sydney 2000.

The museum was partly funded by a donation from the IOC.

The country won two silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics in August, with middle distance runner Taoufik Makhloufi claiming both after finishing second in both the men's 800m and 1,500m.

Algiers is currently gearing up to host the 2018 African Youth Games.

These will serve as a qualifying event for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.
