The application process to become one of more than 15,000 volunteers for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is due to open tomorrow.

Gold Coast 2018 has confirmed those interested in taking up a voluntary role at next year’s event can apply from 9am local time.

Applicants must be over the age of 16 and must be available during the Games, which run from April 4 to 15.

Volunteers will be expected to work between six and 10-hour shifts and will have to source their own accommodation.

"Queensland has a proud tradition of volunteering and helping out," Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie said.

"Week in, week out, from dawn to dusk, volunteer surf lifesavers patrol the Gold Coast beaches, thousands joined the mud army to clean up the 2011 Brisbane floods and volunteers help out to deliver major events like the Gold Coast Marathon.

"This is the chance for Queenslanders and especially Gold Coasters to get involved with the Games and really become ambassadors for this great State.

"From 9am tomorrow, you can jump to it and volunteer online for the experience of a lifetime."

TAFE Queensland are set to provide specialist training for the volunteers, who will "learn new skills as part of the process", according to Gold Coast 2018.

"Tomorrow is a really exciting day for Gold Coast 2018," Gold Coast 2018 volunteer engagement manager Mat Rogers, a former international rugby player in both union and league, said.

"I’ve been out and about visiting sporting and community groups to promote the programme and the potential to play a part in shaping the Games has really resonated among the community.

"This is the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade and the largest event ever on the Gold Coast.

"I’m really looking forward to working with the volunteers, sharing their stories and the experience all the way through to Games time."
