Park Ji Won and Son Ha Kyung won the respective men’s and women’s 1,500 metres short track speed skating gold medals on a dominant day here for South Korea at the 2017 Winter Universiade.

Within minutes of Son winning the women’s crown with a time of 2min 34.591sec, Park claimed the men’s title in 2:30.622.

Son triumphed in both her heat and semi-final before winning the A final in front of compatriot and defending champion Kim A Lang, who was 0.419 seconds back.

Japan’s Moemi Kikuchi, the strongest performer in the heats, was 0.660 seconds back in third after holding off Kazakhstan’s Kim long A.

Like Son, Park also led a South Korean one-two with fellow countryman Kim Do Kyoum 0.151 seconds back in the silver medal position.

Home favourite Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev completed the top three, finishing 0.665 seconds off the pace.

Short track speed skating action is due to continue tomorrow, when the men’s and women’s 500m events are scheduled.
