Laura Muir sparkled to break the European indoor 3000 metres record on a successful night for Britain at the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe.

Muir, who has already enjoyed victories in track and cross country this year, executed a tactically perfect race to win in 8min 26.41sec in the Messehalle arena.

The time also put her fifth on the world indoor all-time list and took 1.45 seconds off the previous mark held by Russia's Liliya Shobukhova.

Kenya's Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiro finished second in 8:29.17.

Ethiopia's Axumawit Embaye was a distant third in 8:49.52.

Britain's Andrew Pozzi also continued his superb early year form with two world leading times in the 60m hurdles.

He clocked 7.49 in the heats before an ever swifter 7.44 in the final.

It took seven tenths off the previous world leading mark held by Cuba's Olympic silver medallist Orlando Ortega, who was second today in 7.59.

Peter Svoboda of the Czech Republic was third in 7.63.

Outdoor 100m hurdles world record holder Kendra Harrison was another winner in the German town.

Her time of 7.76 was just one hundredth of a second off her 60m hurdles personal best.

“The goal was to come here and cross that line first, so I am very glad I did that,” said the American.

“Of course everyone is going for that world record, and so am I.”

Germany's Cindy Roleder was second in 7.90 to finish just one hundreth clear of third place Australian Sally Pearson.

Belarus' Pavel Seliverstau leapt 2.30 to win the high jump in front of Germany's Mateusz Przybylko, with 2.28 and Bahamas' Dwight Thomas, who managed the same mark but finished behind due to more earlier failures.
