Australia’s Lydia Lassila returned to the top of an International Ski Federation (FIS) Aerials World Cup podium after a fine display in Deer Valley.

Lassila was competing in only her second event after returning from having a second child as she seeks to compete at a fifth Olympic Games next year in Pyeongchang.

The Vancouver 2010 gold medallist would qualify for the final in sixth place, but produced an impressive display to launch herself to the top of the podium.

Lassila delivered a superb run to achieve 95.52 points, with American Kiley McKinnon ending as the runner-up after her jump earned a total of 95.17.

The podium was completed by China’s Xu Mengtao, who finished with a tally of 92.35.

“I was emotional all day and I had a good feeling,” said Lassila, who also won bronze at Sochi 2014.

“I couldn’t believe I won.”

“To be honest, I was happy to stay on my feet.

“I knew it was tough weather and I kind of like that.

“I was in a good space all day – and sometimes days like this are good for me because it becomes fight or flight.”

China’s Qi Guangpu would triumph in the men’s event as he ended comfortably clear of his rivals on a score of 128.96.

Belarus’ Stanislau Hladchenko was left trailing in the Chinese star’s wake, ending with a tally of 114.60.

It would prove enough for him to secure a maiden World Cup podium, with the European awarded second place ahead of Stanislav Nikitin of Russia, who ended on the same score.

Qi moved to the top of the overall World Cup standings following his triumph, while Australia’s Danielle Scott remains in the lead in the women’s series.
