Elena Radionova has won the women's short programme and free skating gold medal at the 2017 Winter Universiade here in Almaty this evening

The Russian has enjoyed an illustrious career so far which has included an International Skating Union (ISU) World Championships bronze medal in Shanghai in 2015 and two European Championships silver medals in 2015 and 2016.

Her pedigree was evident over the rest of the field as Radionova finished top of the standings with 69.02 after yesterday’s short programme and capitalised on that lead today.

Performing to the iconic music from the opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini, Radionova delivered an absolutely flawless performance.

It scored her 127.59 points which gave her a total of 196.61 and took her into first place.

Rin Nitaya of Japan, who finished in third place yesterday, was the final skater to take to the ice.

Her performance earned her a score of 125.28 to give her a combined total of 187.18.

However, that would not be enough to topple Radionova.

Hinano Isobe of Japan competed the podium, taking the bronze medal.

After completing her routine she broke into tears before being awarded a score of 117.49 which gave her a total of 174.27.

Radionova's compatriot, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, started the day in second place but endured a heartbreaking performance today.

She fell twice during her routine and was visibly distraught afterwards.

She scored 102.67 which gave her an overall total of 171.68 which was only good enough for fourth place.
