The 22-year-old Kazakh found herself in seventh place after missing one target at the first shooting stage, but she recovered to shoot perfectly at the second and secure victory in 21 min 43.1sec.

Victory at the Alatau Cross-Country Skiing and Biathlon Complex ensured Vishnevskaya her first-ever gold medal at the Winter Universiade, adding to her silvers in the women’s 15km individual from this year’s event and the mixed relay from the 2015 edition.

Ukraine’s Yana Bondar was Vishnevskaya’s nearest challenger today, finishing 22.8sec back.

Russia’s Anastasiia Egorova was 36.7 off the pace in third.

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all fans for their support at the stadium," Vishnevskaya said.

"The fans are really passionate about biathlon - some people came here all the way from Germany to support me.

"Today I really tried to correct those errors that I made in the previous race.

"I made them while skiing and managed to avoid them today, but I cannot say it was a perfect race as I did have one missed target."

In the men’s 10km sprint event, Semen Suchilov led a Russian one-two ahead of Dmitrii Ivanov with a winning time of 27:02.3.

Ivanov finished 21.8 behind, while Kazakhstan's Roman Yeryomin was 22.3 back in third.

Suchilov now has two medals to his name having won bronze in the men’s 20km individual event on Tuesday (January 31).

He is also due to compete in the men’s 12.5km pursuit, which is scheduled to take place tomorrow along with the women’s 10km pursuit.
