Working groups on three main topics have been established by the International Volleyball Federation’s (FIVB) Athletes’ Commission following a meeting in Lausanne.

The Commission, which gathered for just the second time, decided to set up a group on economic and legal aspects of player transfers and ways in which to educate athletes on these processes.

They will also look into how the sport can be better communicated to fans and how players can increase their profile, and that of volleyball, through social media channels.

“Now we have created a platform for your voices, we look forward to you contributing with your experience and knowledge to increase the relevance of volleyball in the world and your countries,” FIVB President Ary Graça said.

“You are the best ambassadors to convey our values of universality, good governance and innovation around the world.”

The Athletes’ Commission, officially launched at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, was formed to provide a link between the players and the FIVB.

Their first meeting was held during the FIVB Congress in Buenos Aires in October, where Graça was re-elected by acclamation to serve a fresh eight-year term after he stood unopposed.

A host of Olympic gold medallists are on the Commission, with the President and secretary joined by eight other players.

Brazilian legend Giba, gold medallist at Athens 2004, is the current President, while Vladimir Grbic of Serbia, part of the team which won the Olympic title in Sydney four years earlier, serves as secretary.

Xue Chen of China, beach volleyball world champion in 2013, Kim Yeon-koung of South Korea and Olympic gold medallist Julius Brink of Germany are also members.

Brazil’s Emanuel Rego, Olympic champion in Athens along with Giba, three-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medallist Kerri Walsh Jennings of the United States, Italy’s Eleonora Lo Bianco, Bartosz Kurek of Poland and Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova make up the rest of the Athletes’ Commission.
