Japan's Haruka Iwasa and Naoki Nakamura won gold medals in the respective men’s and women’s normal hill individual ski jumping competitions here at the 2017 Winter Universiade today.

Iwasa was second behind Finland’s Susanna Forsstroem after the first round with 111.5 points, but came out on top in the final round with 101.1 to claim the victory with 212.6.

Forsstroem had a 5.4-point advantage over Iwasa after the first round, however a fall when landing in the final round meant a lowly score of 71.2 and saw her finish fourth overall with 188.1.

Like Iwasa, compatriot Yuka Kobayashi benefited from Forsstroem’s misfortune to replicate her silver medal-winning performance from 2015 with 200.2.

Also profiting was Czech Republic’s Marta Krepelkova, who came third with 198.8.

In the men’s event, Nakamura managed 131.6 with his final-round jump for an unrivalled total of 265.8.

Russia's Mikhail Maksimochkin ranked highest in the final round with 134.3, but still fell 2.4 short of Nakamura's total.

Austria's Thomas Lackner completed the podium, finishing 4.6 behind.

Ski jumping medal action is due to continue on Saturday (February 4), when the mixed team competition takes place.
