Germany’s Linus Strasser and the United States’ Mikaela Shiffrin triumphed at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup in Stockholm.

The Swedish capital welcomed the top 16 men’s and women’s skiers for a city slalom event, which saw athletes side-by-side during the competition.

Heats were decided over two slalom runs, with the event continuing until only one athlete remained in each of the events.

Strasser had been yet to reach a World Cup podium and came into the men’s competition as a late replacement for his fellow German Felix Neureuther.

He surprised Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen, winner of last week’s night race, during the first round of the competition.

With last year’s winner Marcel Hirscher of Austria also suffering an early defeat, the competition opened up to the remainder of the field.

Strasser would take full advantage by overcoming Sweden’s Mattias Hargin in the semi-finals, before triumphing against Alexi Pinturault in the final.

The German won the first run by 0.13 seconds, before triumphing in the second by 0.04.

"I am here instead of Felix because of his knee and he said, ‘come on, boy, that’s your chance," said Strasser.

"I took my chance.

"Yeah, you know, it goes so fast, and then in the next moment you’re standing in the finals against Alexis Pinturault and that feels amazing."

Hargin would complete the podium, edging out Britain’s Dave Ryding in the small final.

In the women’s event, Shiffrin survived an early scare when she nearly collided with France’s Adeline Baud Mugnier.

Having beaten her opponent, the American would then overcome Canada’s Marie-Michele Gagnon and Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter.

Shiffrin would then triumph against Slovakia’s Veronika Velez Zuzulova in the final, sealing her first ever City Event victory.

Nina Loeseth of Norway would end third, as she defeated Hansdotter in the small final.
