French handball goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer believes that his country's hosting of the men's World Handball Championships has highlighted the credentials of Paris as the city bids for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Omeyer, a member of the Paris 2024 Athletes' Commission, was between the posts as France beat Norway 33-26 to win the title at the capital's AccorHotels Arena yesterday.

It meant that the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists defended the world title they captured in Qatar in 2015.

"As athletes, we were overwhelmed by the support the tournament received from passionate fans throughout France and from around the world," said 40-year-old Omeyer, who won Olympic gold at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and has now won five world titles.

"The tournament showcased the very best of our nation and we were thrilled to be able to share it with all who participated.

"The success of this event is added proof of France’s ability to deliver incredible events and will serve to further unite the country behind Paris’ bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games."

Paris organisers claim that the Championships - held in eight cities in France - boasted attendances that beat "the most optimistic expectations".

Nearly 540,000 tickets were sold for all 84 matches, with 8.7 million people tuning in to watch on French television and online.

The crowd of 28,000 which witnessed France's round-of-16 victory over Iceland was declared as a new world record while the AccorHotels Arena will be used if Paris is successful with its 2024 bid.

The venue would host basketball, judo and wheelchair basketball, with the Paris Expo proposed as the Olympic handball venue.

Tony Estanguet, the co-chairman of Paris 2024 and a triple canoeing Olympic champion, said: "The success of the 2017 Handball World Championships underlines Paris and France’s exceptional track record of hosting international sport events, that inspire fans around the world.

"Throughout the Championships, fans packed official fan zones in Paris, Montpellier, Albertville, Nantes, Rouen and Metz to share their excitement and enthusiasm for the tournament, further highlighting our nation’s ability to embrace major events and share their passion for Olympic and Paralympic sport."

Budapest and Los Angeles are also bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

A host city will be elected at the International Olympic Committee Session in Lima on September 13.
