Emil Iversen of Norway bounced back from his sprint disappointment by winning the men’s 30 kilometres mass start classic race at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup in Falun.

Iversen, who lost out in a thrilling sprint event yesterday in Sweden by a slender 0.06sec margin, completed the course in 1hr 15min 46.7sec.

The 25-year-old crossed the line in front of team-mate and current overall leader Martin Johnsrud Sundby, who was 3.7 adrift.

Sweden’s Calle Halfvarsson delivered a podium finish for the home crowd as he came through to take third, 5.6 off the winning pace.

“I have been training well for 14 days and thought I could race both events well this weekend,” Iversen said.

“If I had to choose between yesterday and today I am really happy to win today.”

Sundby, a double Olympic medallist, occupies top spot on the Cross-Country World Cup standings with a total of 1,348 points.

Sergey Ustiugov of Russia is 344 behind in second place, while Finland’s Matti Heikkinen is third on 792.

In the women’s event, held over 15km, Marit Bjørgen secured her 105th World Cup victory as she clocked a time of 41:28.8, leading home a podium sweep for Norway.

The six-time Olympic gold medallist edged compatriot Ingvild Flugstad Østberg, who crossed the line 0.5 behind.

Heidi Weng, the overall World Cup leader, was over eight seconds slower than Bjørgen but did enough for third.

“It’s great to be able to win World Cups still,” said Bjørgen.

“I knew that I felt good today and my power was good.

“I worked well with Ingvild today and the three of us (with Heidi) were able to break away and then it was a fight between us three.

“The young girls are strong so it’s feels good to be able to come out with a win.”

Weng has a healthy lead at the summit of the standings as she sits on 1,531, with Krista Parmakoski of Finland second on 1,215.

The Cross-Country World Cup continues with the next competition in Pyeongchang from February 3 to 5.

It is due to serve as a test event for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
