Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have lodged an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to be reinstated in the 2017 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League.

The AFC Entry Control Body barred the South Korean team from competing in this year’s competition, following their involvement in a 2013 bribery scandal.

An investigation had found a club scout had made payments to referees, deemed to be aimed at arranging or influencing the outcome of matches.

The club, who won the 2014 and 2015 K League titles, were handed a nine point deduction and fined $121,170 by the League’s Disciplinary Committee in September.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors had been due to compete this year’s Champions League, having won the competition last year, but AFC Entry Control Body appear to have ended those hopes.

The club are aiming to have the sanction postponed by CAS, which would enable them to compete in the competition.

“Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors seeks an order staying the execution of the challenged decision in order to be able to participate in the competition,” a CAS statement read.

“CAS intends to issue a decision on the request for provisional measures by 3 February 2017.”

Jeju United FC and Ulsan Hyundai were designated to be the third and fourth seeds representing South Korea in the competition should Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors not compete.

As a result of winning last year’s competition, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors competed at last month’s FIFA Club World Cup.

They were beaten in the quarter-finals by Mexican side Club America, who would lose their next match to eventual champion Real Madrid.

The group stage of this year's competition starts on February 20 and the two-legged final will be in November.
