Egypt have claimed the final Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final spot as Group D winners with a 1-0 win over Ghana this evening.

Seven-time African champions Egypt knew a point would be good enough to take them through to the knockout stage alongside Ghana.

Roma winger Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match when he fired a free-kick into the net after just 11 minutes.

A mistake by Ghanaian keeper Brimah Razak handed Marwan Mohsen an opportunity to score a second but he missed the target.

Leicester City's Daniel Amartey missed Ghana's best chance of the match, narrowly heading wide from a set piece.

Avram Grant's Ghana suffered a further blow as captain Asamoah Gyan went off injured on 40 minutes.

In this evening's other match in Group D, Mali were knocked out of the tournament as they drew 1-1 with Uganda.

Alain Giresse's Malian side needed to secured all three points to even have a chance of making the last eight, but would have been eliminated anyway because of Egypt's win.

On an extremely boggy pitch, Mali struggled to find a way past Uganda who had already been eliminated.

Playing with freedom following their elimination, Farouk Miya gave Uganda the lead with their first goal at the tournament since 1978 on 70 minutes.

Just three minutes later, Yves Bissouma replied for Mali with a free-kick.

This evening's results mean Egypt will face Morocco and Ghana will take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in last-eight matches on Sunday (January 29).

Senegal will meet Cameroon while Burkina Faso face Tunisia in the other two quarter-finals on Saturday (January 28).
