Uganda are reportedly set to be represented by five taekwondo players at the US Open Taekwondo Championships, which begin later this month.

According to the New Vision, Samuel Ochaya, Oswaldo Ocira, Elizabeth Okello Royson Okwera, and Cranima Wekurwoth will all compete in the competition.

Their participation comes after Ethiopian Airlines backed the youthful team to attend the Championships for the second time.

Ahmed Bamuwayira, a coach from the Children Sports Charity Academy, claimed the athletes could make an impact on the competition.

"We are ready to make our presence felt at the event that will attract world class performers" he told the New Vision.

The last time Ethiopian Airlines backed Uganda’s participation in the Championships, two athletes were sent to the competition.

Oswaldo Ocira would earn two gold medals at the event, winning the 48 kilogram combat division, as well as topping the podium in the sparring discipline.

His success was followed by a gold medal for 17-year-old Royson Okwera in the cadet competition.

This year’s Championships are scheduled to begin on January 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino will act as the host, with competitions drawing to a close on February 3.
