Double Paralympic champion Jonnie Peacock has helped launch a ticket offer for London schools, which will enable 250,000 schoolchildren to attend the 2017 World Para-Athletics Championships at a discounted price.

The Championships will take place at the London 2012 Olympic stadium from July 14 to 23, with children’s tickets having been priced at £5 ($6.15/€5.76).

Under the latest initiative for schoolchildren across Greater London, tickets will be available for a discounted rate of £3 ($3.69/€3.46), with the scheme having been supported by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Accompanying adults and teachers can attend for free when accompanying the children, while stadium sessions will begin at the slightly later time of 10.30am to enable school parties extra time to travel across London.

All children and teachers attending these sessions will travel free of charge on Transport for London, with a dedicated volunteer then set to be provided for each school party upon arrival.

Peacock, who won men’s T44 100 metres gold at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, launched the scheme at Marion Richardson Primary School in Tower Hamlets.

“It’s great to know that so many schoolchildren from London are able to come and experience a World Championships,” said Peacock, who conducted an athletics lesson and educated them about the Championships.

“London 2017 is the biggest sporting event in the world this year and I am looking forward to being able to show so many young people the best of para-athletics.

“It will be inspirational for so many children to see the best para-athletes in the world competing in London.

“Their support will be amazing as we bid to win medals for the nation.”

Schools have been invited to apply for tickets to five mid-week sessions with mornings being prioritised for primary schools.

Evening sessions will see secondary schools and colleges have priority.

It is claimed the sessions are being primed to accommodate large school parties, with organisers stating they have set up a package of support to ensure an easy process for ticket applications from schools and attendance on the day.

The offer will come to a close on February 10 at 8.17pm (20:17) local time.

“London is ready to welcome the biggest global sports event of 2017 and once again showcase our great city on the world stage and create new sporting history,” said Khan.

“After the success of our record-breaking ParalympicsGB athletes in Rio last year, this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships in London is a not-to-be-missed, golden opportunity for 250,000 young Londoners to see our sporting heroes.”
