British freestyle wrestler Vahid Hosseinpoor has had his doping ban extended by 12 months by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) after he was found to have breached the terms of his suspension.

Hosseinpoor served a two-year ban, which expired in June of last year, after he tested positive for tamoxifen during the British Senior Wrestling Championships in 2014.

UKAD launched an investigation into Hosseinpoor after they received intelligence that the 32-year-old was training with the YMCA Wildcats Wrestling club, based in his hometown of Manchester, in early 2015, which went against the terms of his ban.

"Whilst serving a ban, athletes cannot take part in any activity that is organised, convened, authorised or recognised by a National Governing Body (NGB), or a body that is a member of, affiliated to or licensed by a NGB," UKAD said in a statement.

Following the probe, UKAD concluded Hosseinpoor’s exclusion from the sport should be prolonged by two years.

Hosseinpoor contested the decision and an independent National Anti-Doping Appeal Panel partially upheld his challenge, imposing just a further one-year ban on the athlete.

He will be free to return to competition from June 2.

UKAD director of operations Pat Myhill criticised the wrestler for going against the "spirit of sport" by participating despite currently serving a suspension.

"Any individual currently serving a ban from sport, as a result of an anti-doping rule violation must adhere to the rules for the duration of their ban," he said.

"Vahid Hosseinpoor chose to breach the terms of his ban by continuing to participate in sport during that time.

"This not only goes against his responsibilities as a sportsperson but also the spirit of sport."
