Russia's Natalia Matveeva completed a perfect weekend at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in Italian resort Toblach after winning the women's team sprint event alongside Yulia Belorukova.

The pair clocked a winning time of 18 mins 00.96sec as Matveeva successfully followed up her victory yesterday in the women’s 1.3 kilometres free technique sprint race.

Just as she had the day before, the 30-year-old stole the win in the final metres, finishing 0.04 seconds in front of Sweden's Hanna Falk whose team-mate was Ida Ingemarsdotter.

Norway's Maiken Caspersen Falla led into the final curve, but was unable to hold off the attacks from both Russia and Sweden.

She and partner Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen ended up 0.11 seconds off the pace in third.

"It was an amazing weekend in Toblach," Matveeva said.

"To leave with two wins is great.

"Yulia did a great job in her leg and I had a lot of confidence from yesterday I could be again fast on the home stretch.

"To win with my team-mate is really special."

Victory for Belorukova ensured her a first World Cup podium.

In the men’s event, Canada’s Len Valjas and Alex Harvey came out on top in a time of 16:02.11 to secure their country’s first-ever World Cup team sprint victory.

The duo stayed in contention throughout the final, but it was not until the final climb that Harvey took control of the race before leading down into the stadium for the win.

Sweden’s Karl-Johan Westberg and Oskar Svensson were 0.53 seconds behind in the runners-up spot, with home favourites Dietmar Noeckler and Federico Pellegrino 0.65 seconds back in third.

"I had a little bit of trouble in the semi-final," Valjas said.

"In the final, I did everything I could to keep a good position and give Alex a good chance to fight for the podium.

"I've finished on the podium before but I’ve never won a World Cup and it is really special to be standing on top with my team-mate."

The second-place finish for Westberg and Svensson earned them both their first-ever World Cup podiums.

Noeckler and Pellegrino, the winners of the last World Cup team sprint competition held in Planica in Slovenia last season, battled back to take third despite the latter crashing on the second lap.
