The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Francis Dodoo has been appointed as the pro-vice chancellor in charge of research, innovation and development at the University of Ghana in Legon.

Dodoo's appointment took effect from January 1, 2017 and he will serve as the second pro-vice chancellor of the university alongside Kwame Ofei who is in charge of academic and student affairs.

The former athlete replaces John Owusu Gyapong who was appointed the vice-chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho last year.

The University of Ghana, which sits in the Accra suburb of Legon, is "the premier university and the largest university in Ghana" with 38,000 students according to its website.

Dodoo is expected to seek re-election as President of the GOC on March 15, 2017.

He succeeded Benson Tongo Baba in October 2011 to become the President of the GOC after a vote that lasted 19 hours and was overseen by armed guards.
