Germany’s Eric Frenzel extended his lead in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup standings after claiming his fifth victory of the season in Val de Fiemme in Italy.

The 28-year-old clocked a time of 29 min 19.4sec to finish 24.2 seconds ahead of compatriot Johannes Rydzek.

Norway’s Magnus Hovdal Moan completed the top three, 25.9sec back, to make an individual podium for the first time since winning in Austrian resort Ramsau am Dachstein in December 2015.

Frenzel found himself in second place after the ski jumping phase, 6.6 points behind Austria’s Mario Seidl who led the way with 133.1 for a 26sec advantage over the chasing pack.

He was not the fastest either over the 10 kilometres cross-country course, but a time of 28:53.4 was good enough to secure victory.

Despite posting the quickest cross-country time, Rydzek had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Moan, who was 23rd after the ski jumping, managed the second-fastest cross-country time to finish third overall.

Fellow Norwegians Espen Andersen and Magnus Krog came fourth and fifth respectively.

Seidl, who was returning from a forced break due to sickness, ended up in 11th spot.

Victory for Frenzel continues Germany’s domination of this season’s World Cup.

Of the four races not won by Frenzel, compatriot Rydzek has won three of them and fellow German Fabian Rießle the other one.

Frenzel leads the World Cup standings on 734 points, 64 more than second-placed Rydzek.

Rießle is 238 points off the pace in third.

Action in Val de Fiemme is due to continue tomorrow with a team sprint event.

A second individual race is scheduled for Sunday (January 15).
