South Africa's Jonker brothers claimed the top two positions in the 15 metres class today as the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) World Gliding Championships continued with day three of action in Australian city Benalla.

Uys Jonker finished top of the pile with 1,000 points as he finished the course in a time of 3 hours 23min 27sec.

His sibling Attie was awarded 994 for coming home slightly behind in 3:24.04.

Both South Africans took to the sky in new JS3 gliders.

Third place went to Hannu Halonen of Finland, who received 980 points for his time of 3:25.33. 

Poland's Sebastian Kawa still leads the way overall with 1,590 points after a sixth place finish in his Diana 2.

However, Uys Jonker is now on his tail with 1,540 points, five points in front of his brother.

In the 18m class, American Sean Fidler clinched first place, gaining the top amount of 1,000 points for his time of 3:08.13.

Czech Republic flyers came second and third with Roman Mracek clinching the runners-up spot in 3:15:00, for 944 points.

His compatriot Petr Svoboda was third in 3:15.25 for 941 points, with the top three all flying ASG29 gliders.

Fidler is now second behind Killian Walbrou in the overall standings, with 1,898 points compared to the Frenchman's 1,903.

Open class honours went to another South African as Oscar Goudriaan was timed at 2:08.30 in his JS1c for 657 points.

Britain's Russell Cheetham, manning the same glider, was second in 2:09.09, earning 650 points.

Third went to Sebastian Eder in his EB29, with the Austrian clocking 2:09.31 for a points total of 647.

Germany's eighth place finisher Michael Sommer remains as the overall leader on 2,029.

Action will continue until January 22.
