A record-breaking number of athletes are set to compete at the 2017 edition of the Karate1 Premier League event in Paris, with 1,096 competitors from 77 nations already registered.

The figure far exceeds the tally for last year’s tournament at the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium sports hall, where 911 karatekas from 72 countries competed.

Entry for the event in the French capital is due to close on January 22, with action scheduled to take place from January 27 to 29.

More than 300 clubs are signed up to participate along with 133 coaches from 86 countries and 150 referees.

The World Karate Federation is also expecting the venue to be full to capacity during the three days of competition.

Spectators are likely to be treated to a high-level of competition given that eight of the 12 current world champions in individual categories have already completed their registration.

The Karate1 Premier League is the sport’s most prestigious event of its kind.

It is made up of a number of the most prominent karate competitions and endeavours to bring together the world’s best.

Other cities due to host events in the League this year are Rotterdam in The Netherlands, Dubai in the United Arab of Emirates, Rabat in Morocco, and Halle and Leipzig in Germany.

The Karate1 Premier League will also be one of the key elements in qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as points allocated will play an essential role in the configuration of the world rankings.

Karate was added to the Tokyo 2020 programme last year alongside baseball and softball, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.
