The Togo National Olympic Committee (CNOT) has held the second edition of their Avé Track and Field meeting.

Taking place in Kévé in the south-west of the African country, the event saw an equal number of boys and girls from 20 high schools and sixth-form colleges take part.

A number of track and field events were part of the two-day meeting, which had the aim of identifying talented young athletes.

Those selected will now be monitored and given support.

All of the youngsters showed "plenty of enthusiasm and commitment", according to CNOT, who were present at the event alongside the Togolese Athletics Federation.

Members of the Red Cross also attended the competition, and it is now hoped that it can be spread to other parts of the country.

In October, CNOT held an "Olympic walk" to celebrate the country's participation at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August.

Togo sent a team of five athletes to the Brazilian city, including sprinters Fabrice Dabla and Prénam Pesse.

Rower Claire Akossiwa competed in the women's single sculls, with swimmers Eméric Kpegba and Adzo Kpossi both appearing in the pool.

The country won its first - and to date only - Olympic medal at Beijing 2008 thanks to canoeist Benjamin Boukpeti.

He secured a historic bronze by coming third in the men's K1 slalom competition.

Togo made their Summer Olympic debut at Munich 1972, but missed the next two editions of the Games in Montreal and Moscow.

A Togolese team has appeared every time since then, however, with the country also making its Winter Olympic debut at Sochi 2014 by fielding a team of two women.

Skiers Alessia Afi Dipol and Mathilde-Amivi Petitjean featured in Alpine and cross-country events respectively.
