Virat Kohli has been confirmed as the new captain of India’s limited overs cricket teams following Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s resignation.

It had been expected the 28-year-old, who is the country’s Test skipper, would be given the role of leading the One Day International and Twenty20 sides as well and today the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his appointment.

Kohli has 176 ODI and 45 T20 international caps to his name and averages 52.93 and 57.13 in the formats respectively with the bat.

He was also part of the team who won a second International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup crown in 2011, which was secured on home soil.

Despite stepping aside from his captaincy duties, Dhoni has remained in the India team for their ODI and T20 series against England.

The 35-year-old was selected in both squads announced alongside the confirmation of Kohli’s promotion.

There was also a recall for all-rounder Yuvraj Singh after spending 10 months out of the limited overs sides.

Pune will host the first of three ODIs against England on January 15 before the series heads to Cuttack four days later.

It will be wrapped up in Kolkata on January 22 before the three-match T20 series begins in Kanpur on January 26.

The other two games are due to take place in Nagpur on January 29 and in Bangalore on February 1.
