Double Paralympic gold medallist Samuel Muchai Kimani of Kenya has set his sights on the breaking the world record in the T11 5,000 metres event at the World Para-Athletics Championships in London this year.

Kimani won two gold medals at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in the men’s T11 5,000m and T11 1,500m competitions in September.

The athlete, who trains in Nandi and was born in Trans Nzoia County, already holds the world record in the 1,500m, a time of 3 mins 58.7 secs, which he set at the 2012 Paralympics Games in London.

He has a personal best time of 15:16.11 in the T11 5,000m, which he posted while winning gold at the Rio Games this year.

“I have the 1,500m T11 world record and I also want to target in the 5,000m," he added.

"I believe it is do-able because considering my previous performance."

The current world record is 15:11.07 which was set at the 2004 Athens Paralympics by another Kenyan, Henry Wanyoike.

"I was about six seconds shy of the target in Rio but I am determined to smash it this year," claimed Kimani.

"I have already started my training and I can only hope for the best."

When the event comes to London between July 14 and 23, it will mark the first time the World Para-Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships have been held in the same city.
