Based in Glasgow, the company, founded in 1962, will power the 18 competition venues due to be used at the Games, as well as the International Broadcast Centre.

The deal, worth a reported $40 million (£32.5 million/€38.5 million), comes after the company pulled out of the tender process to provide generators at the Olympic and Paralympics Games in Rio de Janeiro in December 2015.

They told investors that contracts for Rio 2016 were being awarded separately and that they had been unsuccessful in the opening rounds.

They also cited time constraints, with their announcement coming eight months before Rio 2016 got underway on August 5 last year.

Aggreko will also become a sponsor of Pyeongchang 2018, the first edition of the Winter Olympics to take place in South Korea, due to run from February 9 to 25, as part of the deal.

The company made the announcement in a trading update today.

"I am delighted that Aggreko has been appointed the official power provider for the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018" Aggreko chief executive Chris Weston said.

"We look forward to helping the Organising Committee deliver another successful Games."

Aggreko are also due to provide generators for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, scheduled to be held from April 4 to 15.

More than 100 engineers, project managers and global events specialists from Aggreko will work at the Games to design, manage, install and operate its generators and allied electrical distribution equipment.

They also performed the role at the 2014 edition of the quadrennial event in Glasgow.

Aggreko supplied the power at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, with their deal in the British capital totalling £37 million ($45.4 million/€43.5 million).
