A celebration of the life of Canada's 13-time Paralympic medallist Lana Spreeman has been held in Calgary.

The Alpine skier lost her battle with brain cancer in November, at the age of 61.

She competed at five Winter Paralympic Games, winning gold in the giant slalom 2A competition in Geilo in Norway in 1980.

Spreeman then won two silver medals in Innsbruck in 1984 before adding a silver and a bronze when the Austrian city played host to the Games again four years later.

In Albertville in France in 1992, Spreeman won four more medals - two silvers and two bronzes - before she was asked to be Canada's Closing Ceremony flagbearer at Lillehammer in Norway in 1994.

That came after she won another four medals - three bronze and one silver.

She leaves behind one son, two grandchildren and three brothers.

After her Paralympic sports career, she enjoyed success in business, operating two massage therapy clinics.

"The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) sends its heartfelt condolences to Lana’s family, friends and community," a statement from the CPC said.

A tree will be planted in her memory at Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary.

Spreeman also took part in Iron Man Canada races.
