Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) chief executive officer David Collier has said the awarding of hosting rights to the 2025 World Cup nine years ahead of the tournament is an “important step” to developing the sport.

Canada and the United States are set to host the competition, the first time it will be held outside Europe or Australasia, subject to the signing of contracts with the world governing body.

Following the award of the 2021 World Cup to England, it was recommended to grant the tournament four years later to the North American nations.

Reflecting on the last 12 months, Collier, who was CEO at the England and Wales Cricket Board for 10 years until 2014, said giving the rights with nine years before the competition is due to begin was a good decision.

“The importance of progressing the award of the 2025 tournament with nine years to prepare the ground should not be underestimated,” he said.

“Not only is it a huge opportunity to promote and build the sport globally, but agreement so far out illustrates the growing strategic co-operation amongst the RLIF members which augurs well for the future.”

In 2017, the World Cup will head to Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea with the tournament due to take place between October 26 and December 2.

Australia are the defending champions, having beaten New Zealand 34-2 in the 2013 final, which was played in Manchester.
