Andrew Randell has been appointed men’s senior coach at Rowing Australia, where he will be hoping to make the most of his experience of mentoring many crews to World Championship and World Cup successes.

Randell joins men’s head coach Ian Wright and fellow men’s senior coach Mark Prater at the Reinhold Batschi National Training Centre in Canberra.

He does so having most recently been the head coach and state talent pathway coordinator for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Academy of Sport.

In his time coaching with the national team, Randell has been to two Olympic Games - Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016.

His first international medal came back in 1995 when he oversaw the men’s four to a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Polish city Poznań.

He went on to coach the men’s four to a gold at the 2002 Junior World Championships in Trakai in Lithuania and guided the men’s coxed four to a gold at the 2004 Under-23 World Regatta in Poznań.

In 2013, he coached the men’s four to a silver medal at the Under-23 World Championships in Austrian city Linz, while the following year he led the men’s eight that went on to win a silver medal at the same event in Italian city Varese.

Additionally, Randell has played a pivotal role over the years in developing Australia’s US-based underage athletes.

This year, Randell was responsible for Australia’s men’s double sculls and men’s single sculls at Rio 2016.

He helped Rhys Grant to qualification for the men’s singles sculls competition at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne in Switzerland.

Outside of his international coaching, Randell has also held the positions of head coach at Adelaide Rowing Club, Prince Alfred College in Adelaide and the New South Wales Institute of Sport.

"I am really looking forwarded to joining Ian and Mark at the Reinhold Batschi National Training Centre," said Randell.

"I have been working for many years developing Australia’s male athletes and I am excited about what the next four years will bring for our athletes and being a part of a strong men’s coaching team."

Wright joined Rowing Australia in October, having been unveiled the month prior along with new women’s head coach John Keogh.

Providing technical leadership of the men’s rowing programme, Wright has been tasked with aiding the men’s senior and assistant coaches and with "driving the ongoing development of Australia’s elite male rowers".

The New Zealander was the head coach of the Swiss Rowing Federation at Rio 2016, as the country won gold in the men’s lightweight coxless four.

Wright, himself an Olympic bronze medallist and a Commonwealth Games silver and bronze medallist, has already worked in Australia as head coach and director at Melbourne University Rowing Club from 2005 to 2009.

"I’m delighted to welcome Andrew to the coaching team at the Reinhold Batschi National Training Centre," he said.

"He has a proven track record in developing athletes to perform on the world stage and I’m looking forward to working alongside him and Mark over the next four years."
