Hockey Ireland have announced the appointment of Jerome Pels as their new chief executive.

The Dutchman takes over from interim chief executive Rob Johnson, who has served for a year, and will take up his new role on January 3.

Pels is well known in sporting governance circles after serving as the chief executive of World Sailing - then called the International Sailing Federation - between 2008 and 2014.

In all he was at the world governing body for 17 years.

He also held roles at the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and was interim chief executive of Boccia England earlier this year.

"Jerome has been involved with international sport for much of his career," a Hockey Ireland statement said.

"During this time, he has acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience.

"The Board believe that between Jerome’s skill set, and his experience, he is the ideal candidate to bring Hockey Ireland to the next level.

"The Hockey Ireland Board look forward to working closely with Jerome so that Hockey Ireland’s ambitions are achieved."

Pels' appointment comes after the Irish men's team made history by qualifying for the Olympic Games for the first time since 1908.

Ireland finished 10th at Rio 2016, winning one group match against Canada.

The women's team has never qualified for the Olympics.

Pels is married to Fleur, the sister of Britain's four-time Olympic sailing champion Sir Ben Ainslie.

David Balbirnie, an honorary life member of Hockey Ireland, unsuccessfully bid to become President of the International Hockey Federation in November.

India’s Narinder Batra eventually won the race to succeed outgoing Spaniard Leandro Negre.
