Under the selection criteria, the host nation Australia and the three highest ranked Commonwealth Games Associations on the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) world rankings in July 2017 win earn places.

A further four spots will then be awarded for the men’s and women’s competitions, to give the full eight qualifiers for the event.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chief executive Jon Doig had called for there to be clarity over the selection of these four places, as although his country, England, Wales and Northern Ireland will compete separately at the Games, they join forces in basketball and play as Great Britain. 

"Initially, Gold Coast 2018 need to identify the top four teams based on world rankings to be automatic selections and then come up with a formula to look at the rest of the places," Doig told mvp247.

"The complication is with the home nations because they compete internationally as Great Britain.

"Hopefully we get come clarity soon over the situation but then we would go through a process of assessment around whether they would perform well enough to finish in the top six, which is what we will look at across all the sports."

It was suggested the home nations may be required to take part in a series of friendly matches before the Games to determine the qualifiers, but the CGF have stated this will not be necessary.

"These four places will be will be allocated to CGAs by FIBA and the CGF based on current competition results, performance and availability," a CGF spokesman told insidethegames.

"Our aim is to ensure the participation of at least four of the CGF’s six regions through this process.

"In the unique situation of England, Scotland, Wales and other GB teams - who do not feature individually on the FIBA World Rankings list - there are two opportunities for teams to qualify. 

"Firstly, if the Great Britain basketball team is among the three highest Commonwealth nations in FIBA’s World Rankings on July 1 next year, the place will be awarded to the CGA with most athletes in the Great Britain basketball team on July 1, 2017.

"Other CGAs will be eligible for discretionary identification by FIBA/CGF to participate based on current competition results, performance and availability.

"There is no requirement for additional selection events to be created."

Britain are currently ranked fourth among Commonwealth nations in the men’s FIBA rankings, behind Australia, New Zealand and Nigeria.

They lie third in the women’s standings, behind Australia and Canada.

Australia won both the men’s and women’s gold medals when the sport was last contested at the Commonwealth Games back at Melbourne 2006, with New Zealand taking the silver medals.

England won bronze in both events.
