Johannes Rydzek maintained his lead at the summit of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup as he led home a German clean sweep during the latest stop on the calendar in Ramsau am Dachstein, Austria.

The double Olympic medallist took victory in front of team-mates Fabian Rießle and Eric Frenzel, who were second and third respectively.

Vinzenz Geiger completed the dominance from the German team as he was fourth.

Rydzek, also a two-time world champion, completed the cross-country section of today’s competition in 22min 13.6sec to finish in an overall 22:23.6.

The 25-year-old was third after the ski jumping event having leapt 97 metres, earning him a score of 136.3 points.

He crossed the line 1.5 seconds quicker than Rießle, while Frenzel, who unsurprisingly reigned supreme in the ski jumping as he recorded 100.5m for a total of 138.9 points, was a further 7.2 seconds adrift.

Rydzek now has 430 points at the top of the Nordic Combined World Cup leaderboard, with 10 kilometres normal hill Olympic gold medallist Frenzel second on 354.

Double Olympic medallist Rießle is third on 262 to maintain Germany’s stranglehold on the overall standings.

Rydzek began the race with a 10 second deficit behind Frenzel due to their placings after the ski jumping round but was able to make up the gap with a rapid display on the skis.

The entire field, comprised of 50 athletes, were separated by just two minutes and eight seconds, which made for an interesting tactical race.

Rießle had raised the possibility of Germany monopolising the top four positions thanks to his seventh place in the ski jumping, achieved thanks to a score of 133.8 points after a jump of 96 metres, but he still had to bridge a 30-second deficit to Frenzel.

He managed to surpass his countryman in the end but neither were a match for Rydzek, who goes into tomorrow’s competition as the favourite to earn another victory.
