Britain’s Elise Christie repeated her success from Shanghai as she picked up gold in the women’s 1,000 metres at the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup at the Gangneung Ice Arena today.

The 26-year-old, winner of both 500m races in last week’s leg of the competition, held off her challengers over the longer distance to take first place at the event, a test event for the venue which will be used during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Christie made no mistakes in either the quarter or semi-finals, finishing first in both the races.

In the final, she came up against home favourite and World Cup leader Choi Min-jeong, Canada’s Marie-Eve Drolet and Rianne de Vries of The Netherlands.

It was a closely fought race, but the Scot pulled ahead and got round the 1,000m in 1min 29.339sec, with Choi finished second and Drolet coming third.

She now has the chance of picking up a second golden double in as many weekends when she takes to the ice for the second 1,000m event.

Choi still leads the World Cup standings on 28,000 points, a full 10,000 in front of fellow Korean Kim Ji-yoo.

In the men’s 1,000m, Kazakhstan’s Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev picked up his maiden World Cup gold ahead of the Canadian duo of Pascal Dion and Patrick Duffy.

There was something to cheer for the home crowd in the men’s 1,500m as Lee Jung-su finished first and in doing so, took over at the top of the World Cup rankings from The Netherlands’ Sjinkie Knegt, who took second place.

Russia’s Semen Elistratov was third.

More glory for the hosts followed in the women’s 1,500m as Shim Suk-hee won her fourth gold medal of the season as she finished ahead of Marianne St Gelais of Canada, who saw team-mate Kim Boutin come third.

The evening was rounded off by two sets of relays, the men’s 5,000m and women’s 3,000m.

Both were at the semi-final stage with Hungary, South Korea, China and the United States progressing in the men’s racing.

The women’s semi-finals were won by South Korea and The Netherlands, with Canada and China completing the line-up for tomorrow’s final.
