Austrian team-mates Claudia Loesch and Roman Rabl tasted success on home snow today as they recorded giant slalom wins at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Para-Alpine Skiing World Cup in Kuhtai.

Loesch, who missed most of last season due to injury, captured the women’s sitting title in 2 mins 27.18sec after not finishing her slalom runs yesterday.

The 2015 World Championship silver medallist finished ahead of Germany’s Ruth Hagspiel, second in 2:35.50, and The Netherlands' Linda van Impelen, third in 2:52.87.

Rabl, the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympic Games bronze medallist, triumphed in the men’s sitting in 2:05.26.

Norway’s Jesper Pedersen was second in 2:05.56, while Switzerland’s Christoph Kunz was third in 2:07.26.

Only 0.01 seconds separated the first and second-place finishers in the men’s visually impaired giant slalom, with Canada’s reigning Paralympic champion Mac Marcoux and his new guide Jack Leitch claiming their first victory of the season in 2:06.88.

Slovakian skiers completed the podium as Marek Kubacka and guide Maria Zatovicova took second in 2:06.89, and Miroslav Haraus and guide Maros Hudik, winners of yesterday’s slalom, finished third in 2:07.62.

Compatriot Henrieta Farkasova, and guide Natalia Subrtova, won the women’s visually impaired giant slalom in 2:18.34 to claim their second win of the World Cup.

World bronze medallist Melissa Perrine of Australia, and guide Andrew Bor, took the runners-up sport, just 0.88 seconds behind the Slovakians.

Britain’s Millie Knight, guided by Brett Wild, reached the last step of the podium in 2:20.59.

Germany’s Andrea Rothfuss, who won four silver medals at the 2015 World Championships, produced the two fastest runs to win the women’s standing giant slalom in 2:12.99.

She beat Canadian team-mates Alana Ramsay and Erin Latimer, who clocked 2:16.37 and 2:23.49 respectively.

Slovakia’s Martin France came away with the men’s standing giant slalom title in 2:01.22, marking his first victory of the season.

The United States’ Thomas Walsh secured his second podium finish in Kuhtai by finishing runner-up in 2:02.35, while Australia’s Mitchell Gourley completed the top three in 2:04.11.

Competition is due to conclude tomorrow with a second day of giant slalom action.

The World Cup is then set to move to St. Moritz in Switzerland from December 19 to 22.

More than 100 athletes from nearly 25 countries are racing across both editions.

They will be looking to prove their form in the build-up to the 2017 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in Tarvisio in Italy, where action is scheduled to take place from January 22 to 31.
