World Karate Federation (WKF) President Antonio Espinós has met with leading officials in Dubai to discuss preparations for the 2017 Karate1 Premier League event in the United Arab Emirates city.

Among those joining the Spaniard was WKF vice-president Nasser Al Razooqi and Yemen Karate Federation President Mukhtar Saif.

WKF Technical Commission member Mohamed Abbas was also in attendance, along with the chairman of the newly-established WKF Protocol Commission, Alaa Halawish.

Progress made before what will be the third leg of the 2017 Karate1 Premier League season, due to be held from March 31 to April 3, was addressed.

Also discussed were the meetings to be conducted in association with the event and the activities of the WKF Protocol Commission.

As was decided during October's 2016 Karate World Championships in Austrian city Linz, the first-ever Executive Committee meeting between World Championships will take place in Dubai, as well as other gatherings of different WKF Commissions.

The Karate1 Premier League series comprises up to 10 competitions yearly.

Its establishment in 2011 marked the first time the WKF had organised a competition with prize money for the winners.

The series aims to serve as an instrument to showcase the evolution of the sport.

Karate was officially added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme in August, alongside baseball and softball, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

Espinós said last month he hopes Tokyo 2020 will mark the start rather than the culmination of the sport's Olympic dream and has speculated that Budapest and Paris offer their best opportunities for inclusion at the 2024 Games.

Los Angeles is also in the running for the 2024 Games, with Rome's effort currently suspended.
