Finland defeated perennial rivals Sweden via a dramatic penalty shoot-out to win the International Floorball Federation (IFF) Men's World Championship at the Arena Riga in Latvia today.

The two Scandinavian countries have dominated the event since the first edition in 1996, with the Swedes winning eight out of the 10 competitions to have been played with Finland triumphing at the other two.

Switzerland and Czech Republic are the only two other countries to have made it to the final in that time, with both of the Finns' previous final victories coming against Sweden.

They prevented their neighbours from making it nine titles and three in a row with their 4-3 victory earning them a third crown.

Sweden had opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period as Kim Nilsson and Tobias Gustafsson struck, with the second goal standing after a video replay.

A rip-roaring opening stanza ended level, however, thanks to Peter Kotilainen and Sami Johansson registering for the Finns.

In the second period Gustafsson struck again as Sweden regained the lead but Kotilainen ensured the game was level going into the third.

The last period would end scoreless, as would ten minutes of over-time which ensured the shoot-out.

Finland were successful with all four of their attempts thanks to some fantastic finishing, and they were given a sniff of victory when Henrik Stenberg dragged Sweden's third penalty wide.

Johan Samuelsson then saw his effort saved to hand the Finns the title.
