The third stage of the 2016-2017 International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup is set to take place in Davos in Switzerland this weekend.

The men's 30 kilometre races and women's 15km event take centre stage tomorrow (December 10) before sprint action completes the meeting on Sunday (December 11).

The women's 15km freestyle event will have a new champion this weekend for the first time in three years.

Therese Johaug and Marit Bjørgen combined have won the last seven World Cup distance races held in Davos but neither are competing this weekend.

Norway currently dominate the men's overall World Cup standings with four skiers in the top five.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby, a silver medallist at Vancouver 2010 and bronze medallist at Sochi 2014, currently leads the overall standings on 350 points after he won the overall three-day tour victories on home snow in Lillehammer last weekend.

Not far behind Sundby, who tasted success at this event during last year's World Cup, is Swede Calle Halfvarsson.

He arrives in Davos in terrific form after collecting two race wins in Lillehammer last week.

Halfvarsson also finished second in the sprint race in Ruka during the first stage of the World Cup.

Norway also have a strong grip on the women's World Cup table with Heidi Weng dominating so far.

Weng currently leads her compatriot, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg, by 90 points after she claimed the overall title in Lillehammer last week.

Meanwhile, Switzerland's Dario Cologna will be looking to break his streak of never winning a World Cup event on home snow in Switzerland.

In 23 attempts he has finished on the podium four times in his homeland, three times in second place and once in third.

Cologna has compete twice before in the 30km freestyle race in Davos.

In 2011 he finished in 23rd position and in 2015 he reached 15th place.

The 30-year-old has tasted World Cup success in seven different countries and will be hoping to make it an eighth on home snow this weekend.
