The season's best figure skaters are set to descend on the French city of Marseille for the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating and Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating finals from tomorrow.

The events feature the top six pairs in each category from the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating campaigns.

Thirty-six couples from seven ISU member nations will compete for prize money of $272,000 (£215,000/€253,000) in the senior competition.

Reigning world champion Javier Fernandez of Spain and Canada's three-time world champion Patrick Chan lead the men's Grand Prix standings with two victories on the circuit this year. 

Fernandez achieved a season's best of 292.98 points at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow while Chan scored 279.72 at the Cup of China in Beijing.

However, Olympic and ISU Grand Prix Final champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan has scored the highest season's best of 301.47 at the NHK Trophy in Sapporo two weeks ago.

Russia's reigning world and ISU Grand Prix Final champion Evgenia Medvedeva once again tops the women's standings.

Her compatriot Anna Pogorilaya will return to the final, after missing it last season, and has accrued a season's best 215.21 points after winning her two events.

Another Russian, reigning ISU Grand Prix Final bronze medallist Elena Radionova, will be competing in her fourth consecutive final at senior level while Canadian Kaetlyn Osmond and world junior silver medallist Maria Sotskova of Russia will be making their debuts at senior level.

Elsewhere, reigning world champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada lead the pairs standings following two victories on the circuit and have set the highest season's best so far with 218.30 points.

The Chinese pairs of Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang and Cheng Peng and Yang Jinseason will also be competing after they claimed season's best points totals of 203.76 and 196.97 respectively.

The ice dance event features Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic champions and Sochi 2014 silver medallists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, who returned to competition this year after taking a two year break.

The two-time world champions have won two Grand Prix events and set a new highest total score with 195.84 points at the NHK Trophy.

France's double world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron will also be in action this week while world silver medallists and sibilings Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani of the United States are also set to compete.

Meanwhile, 36 couples from seven ISU members have also qualified for the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. 

Alexander Samarin of Russia and South Korea's Jun Hwa Cha are the top qualifiers in the men’s competition after they won two events each earlier this season.

Russia's Anastasiia Gubanova tops the women's standings with two victories on the circuit while 2016 world junior champion Marin Honda of Japan secured the last qualifying spot for the final.

World junior silver medallists Anastasia Mishina and Vladislav Mirzoev of Russia lead the junior pairs event and are the only couple with two victories on the circuit.

They are joined by reigning world junior champions and ISU Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalists Anna Duskova and Martin Bidar of the Czech Republic.

The finals officially begin tomorrow with the junior short dance, junior men, junior pairs, junior ladies, pairs and men’s short programmes.

The junior free dance, junior ladies free skating, short dance, pairs free skating and ladies short programme then take centre stage on Friday (December 9).

Action in the junior men, junior pairs free skating, free dance and ladies and men’s free skating competitions then bring the event to a close on Saturday (December 10).
