The under-23 world champion was barred from competing at the season-opener in Winterberg last week for being overweight, but recovered with a second World Cup singles triumph.

He sped down the Mount Van Hoevenberg track for a combined time of 1min 43.088.

This was enough for a slender win by just six thousandths of a second over Russia's 2015 world and European champion Semen Pavlichenko, whose second run was quicker.

Austrian Wolfgang Kindl took third olace in 1:43.182 to claim a hat-trick of consecutive podiums at Lake Placid.

"It sounds pretty good - 0 to 100 in the space of a week," said West,

"Last week’s disqualification was unfortunate because it meant I also missed the sprint and so was effectively unable to get any points in two races."

Germany's Felix Loch will have to wait even longer for his first World Cup victory on the demanding artificial ice track after finishing in sixth place.

The defending World Cup title-holder, who did win the second of his five World Championship titles on this track in 2009, had the consolation of taking the lead in the World Cup standings on 210 points.

Germany's first round winner Johannes Ludwig lies second overall just one point behind after placing ninth today.

Russia's Roman Repilov currently lies third on 186 points after finishing fifth.
