Number three seed Yui Kamiji booked her place in the women’s singles semi-finals at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters after beating world number one and defending champion Jiske Griffioen at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Fresh from a straight-sets victory over Great Britain’s Lucy Shuker in her opening pool one match yesterday, the Japanese triumphed 6-3, 6-3 against her Dutch opponent to secure a last-four berth.

"The first set was difficult and close but I was good today," Kamiji said.

"I’m very happy with my performance."

Today’s other match in pool one saw Shuker successfully bounce back from her defeat to Kamiji, coming from behind to overcome last year’s beaten finalist Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Next up for the Briton is a winner-takes-all match against Griffioen tomorrow, when a place in the semi-finals will be up for grabs.

In pool two, The Netherlands’ Aniek van Koot held off the challenge of compatriot Diede de Groot to triumph 7-5, 6-4 and make it two wins out of two.

The enforced withdrawal of Britain’s Jordanne Whiley’s from the tournament due to injury meant Marjolein Buis of The Netherlands was not in action today.

In the men’s singles, defending champion Joachim Gerard of Belgium secured his progression through to the semi-finals with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over world number one Stephane Houdet of France.

The other match in pool one pitted France’s Nicolas Peifer against Britain’s Alfie Hewett and it was the latter that came out on top, powering to a 6-0, 6-3 win.

In pool two, The Netherlands’ Maikel Scheffers beat Sweden’s Stefan Olsson 6-2, 6-2 and there was a 6-1, 6-2 victory for world number two Gordon Reid of Britain against Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in a reverse of this year’s French Open final.

Action also continued today in the quad division as eight-time defending champion David Wagner of the United States ensured a semi-final spot by overcoming Israel’s Itay Erenlib 7-5, 6-2 in pool one.

Joining Wagner in the last four is Britain’s Andy Lapthorne, who defeated Kyu-Seung Kim 6-2, 6-2 to guarantee top spot in pool two.

The final round-robin matches are due to take place tomorrow, with the semi-finals scheduled for Saturday (December 3).
