Visitors to the 2017 International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti are being encouraged to travel by train to play their part in a "sustainable" event.

Organisers in Finland have signed a deal with train company VR and want fans to arrive at the Championships "with ease" and in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Championships have the slogan "not for 10 days but for the next 100 years" and aim to "create a framework that shows the way to future international sport events".

Thirty trains are scheduled to travel in both directions between Lahti and capital city Helsinki every day during the Championships, with good connections also promised to the rest of Finland.

The walking distance from the Central Station to the Championship venues is 15 minutes.

An evening train will depart before 10pm and allow visitors to wake up the next morning in Rovaniemi in Lapland.

"Our sustainability work is based on several deeds from efficiency in material use to public transportation and promoting equal rights to girls," said Lahti 2017 secretary general Janne Leskinen.

"Both International Olympic Committee and International Ski Federation have acknowledged our sustainability programme and are following it closely.

"We have an opportunity here that is bigger than Finland and these World Championships to actually have an effect when other major sport events are adjusting their operating models to more sustainable direction."

Cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined will all be part of the Championships, which will take place between February 22 and March 3.

"Collaborating with Lahti 2017 World Championships was a natural decision for us, because train is absolutely the most efficient way to arrive," said VR's senior vice president for passenger services, Maisa Romanainen.

"[It is] quick, comfortable, affordable and ecological.

"The city of Lahti is very well connected from different parts of Finland."
