The Frenchwoman, the world champion in the discipline in 2013 in Schladming, clocked a combined time of 1min 59.26sec to seal success at the Vermont resort.

Twenty-seven-year-old Worley had not been on a World Cup podium since 2013 but excelled in the first race at this level held in the eastern US for 25 years.

She had to come from behind as her first run of 59.56sec was only the second quickest down behind Norway's Nina Loeseth, who was timed at 59.47sec.

The Norwegian faltered on her second run, however, going over a minute in a time of 1:00.59 which was only enough for second place overall with a total time of 2:00.06.

Sofia Goggia of Italy was the quickest down during the second run, with her 58.93sec the swiftest of the entire day in her combined total of 2:00.37.

That was enough for bronze.

"It’s been long," Worley said about her absence from the podium, which has included spells out injured.

"The tough part was to get the spirit back of the racing and to be able to give everything."

The event in Killington went ahead after tireless snowmaking efforts, with slalom completing the World Cup leg tomorrow.

Switzerland's Lara Gut, the defending overall World Cup champion and the winner of the opening giant slalom race of this season in Soelden in Austria, skied out in today's first run.
