Swiss Paralympic has extended its sponsorship agreement with supermarket chain Co-op, it has been announced.

The two organisations have been working together since 2002 and their deal will now run through to 2019, the year before the next edition of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

British-based company Co-op, founded in Manchester in 1884, provide financial support to Swiss Paralympic to help their athletes take part in international competitions.

They are also hoping to "use the momentum of the past Paralympics to further promote the extraordinary performances in Para sport".

"As a federation such a longstanding loyalty of a partner like Co-op is extremely important," Swiss Paralympic secretary general Veronika Roos said.

"We can guarantee our athletes a continuous and long-term support throughout their sporting career.

"Furthermore, Co-op has the ability to raise the awareness of Para-sport and our values in the public through their communication channels."

Switzerland won a total of five medals at this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, four of which were claimed by wheelchair racer Marcel Hug.

Hug finally got his hands on Paralympic gold when he stormed to victory in the men’s 800 metres T54 on the track, before he went on to reign supreme in the T54 marathon.

The 30-year-old also clinched silver medals in the 1,500m and 5,000m T53/54 events.

Switzerland’s other medal came in the men’s cycling road race H2 as Tobias Fankhauser took home the bronze.

"We are a convinced partner of Swiss Paralympic," Joos Sutter, head of the company management of Co-op, said.

"The top performances that Para-athletes achieve continue to impress me every time."
